BARCELONA, Spain –

The third-seeded Ferrer will face six-time champion and fellow countryman Rafael Nadal in Sunday’s final. Nadal beat 2010 winner Fernando Verdasco 6-0, 6-4 in the other semifinal.

“I’m very happy to make my fourth final,” Ferrer said. “I have a special relationship with this tournament. I hope I can fulfil my dream of finally winning here.”

A ruthless Nadal dominated from the start against Verdasco, winning 21 of 27 points to steal his opponent’s first three service games and set him on his way to his 33rd straight win at the competition.

“Rafa is the best clay-court player ever,” said Ferrer. “He has beaten me three times in the finals here. I hope tomorrow is different.”

MONACO — Seven-time defending champion Rafael Nadal will try to beat top-ranked Novak Djokovic for the first time in eight finals when they meet in the Monte Carlo Masters decider on Sunday.

Nadal advanced to the final without dropping a set when he beat Gilles Simon 6-3, 6-4 in his semifinal on Saturday, while Djokovic earlier rallied from a set down to beat Tomas Berdych 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and reach his second final at Monte Carlo.

“He’s the best ever in history of the sport on this surface. It’s an ultimate challenge,” Djokovic said. “I cannot have ups and downs. I cannot afford that against Rafa. But why not believe that I can win?”

KHARKIV, Ukraine – Possibly looking more toward the Olympics than the Fed Cup, Serena Williams will play overseas for the United States on Saturday for the first time in more than a decade.

The 13-time Grand Slam champion will lead the Americans against Ukraine this weekend in the best-of-five playoff series on clay. But the Olympics, where Williams has won two doubles gold medals but failed to win anything in singles, are also on her mind.

“I think it is more huge for the media for me to win singles,” said Williams, who will face 17-year-old Elina Svitolina on Saturday in the second singles match. “For me, any (Olympic) medal is great. If I win singles, it would be awesome. If I win doubles, it would be awesome. Or if I win mixed.”

MONTE CARLO — Canada’s Daniel Nestor and partner Max Mirnyi reached the final of the Monte Carlo Masters on Saturday with a 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 win over Nenad Zimonjic and Michael Llodra.

Nestor and Mirnyi will take on top-seeded Americans Bob and Mike Bryan on Sunday after they defeated Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez 6-4, 7-6 (5) in the other semi.

“We played a good match after losing the first set. Those guys are a good team and serve really well,” said Nestor. “We lifted our game after the first set and played a very good tibreaker.”

BARCELONA, Spain — Dominika Cibulkova and Sara Errani cruised to easy straight-set victories on Saturday to set up a meeting in the Barcelona Open final.
Cibulkova routed Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-1, 6-1, while seventh-seeded Italian Errani was a 6-1, 6-2 victor over Spanish hopeful Carla Suarez Navarro.

Errani’s ninth straight victory on clay put her into her second final of the season as the 33rd-ranked Italian looks to follow up her Acapulco triumph in February.

Sunday’s match will be third-seeded Cibulkova’s first final of the year with the 17th-ranked Slovak having won four of their six meetings — including the last two — although she lost their sole meeting on clay in 2007.

HOUSTON — John Isner defeated Feliciano Lopez 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-3 on Saturday to advance to the final of the U.S. Clay Court Championship at River Oaks Country Club.

With the victory, the big-serving Isner became the top-ranked American, moving to No. 9 in the world. He leapfrogged previous No. 9 Mardy Fish, who lost in the second round here on Thursday.

“Coming out of college, I never would’ve imagined (it),” said Isner, a former star at Georgia. “As I continued to improve, I knew that this was potentially attainable for me. Very thrilled to be the top-ranked American. Now, I have a my highest ranking ever, too.”

The 26-year-old Isner is 20-6 this year, including victories over Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

He’ll play Juan Monaco in Sunday’s final. Monaco defeated qualifier Michael Russell 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 earlier in the day. Isner is 7-0 on clay this year, while Monaco is 10-2 on the surface, including a victory in Vina del Mar in February.

The second-seeded Isner will play in his first career final on clay. He’s playing on tired legs after coming to Houston straight from Monte Carlo, when he won two matches to help the U.S. defeat France in the Davis Cup.

“It could be my best moment of my career,” Monaco said. “This is important for me. For sure, my tennis is getting better.”

Monaco, meanwhile, is close to earning his highest-ever ranking. He reached No. 14 early in 2008 before injuries to his left ankle and wrist stalled his progress.

“It’s important,” Monaco said, “but I’m not thinking all day about the ranking. I’m thinking about improving my tennis level. This is why I work every day, to improve my tennis a little bit. Then if I play good tennis, and win matches, the ranking will come along.”

In the doubles final Saturday night, James Blake and Sam Querrey defeated Treat Huey and Dominic Inglot 7-6, 6-4.

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Serena Williams even impressed herself with her powerful showing at the Family Circle Cup on Saturday.

Williams needed less than an hour to dispatch second-seeded Samantha Stosur 6-1, 6-1 and advance to the clay-court final.

“You know, I think it was just one of those days that I could have done anything against anybody,” Williams said.

There aren’t many people in the world who could’ve withstood Williams’ performance at the Family Circle Tennis Center. The 10th-ranked player was on her game from the start, winning the match’s first eight points and rarely letting Stosur catch a breath.

On Sunday, Williams will face Lucie Safarova, a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Polona Hercog.

ATPWorldTour.com reviews five storylines from the first quarter of the 2012 season. In the final instalment, we look at Roger Federer’s consistent start.

Roger Federer is 30 years old and for 12 straight seasons he has lifted silverware. Last month, when he was asked to define success, the Swiss superstar said, “I’m a tennis player, [so] I judge success on the tennis court if I’m winning or losing… I love winning tennis tournaments, especially when you put in all the hard work.”

This year, Federer has maintained his late-2011 season form and compiled a 23-3 match record, with a 4-1 mark against Top 10 opponents. By lifting three straight ATP World Tour titles at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam (d. del Potro), the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships (d. Murray) and the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells (d. Isner), he improved to a 73-30 record in tour-level finals.

Brad Gilbert exclusively told ATPWorldTour.com, “He is playing great tennis. No one can rule him out of a return to World No. 1 or adding to his major haul.”

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. — Serena Williams moved into the fourth round of the Sony Ericsson Open by beating Roberta Vinci of Italy 6-2, 6-1 on Saturday.

Williams started early and finished fast. Walking onto the stadium court at 11 a.m., she dominated with her serve, played consistently from the baseline and was done shortly after noon.

“I’m not a morning person,” she said. “I actually hate morning matches, but I always do my best at 11 o’clock matches.”
